INTRODUCING NEW THERAPIES

INTRODUCING NEW THERAPIES

51 Mission Equine would like to take this opportunity to announce the addition of several new complementary therapies to our currently existing range of equine treatment alternatives.
Acupuncture, Electrostimulation (E-stim) and Laser Therapy arenow available to treat a wide range of conditions common to both the equine athlete and the backyard companion.
Dr. Steve Levine, has become certified in equine acupuncture following the completion of an intensive 160 hour course in equine acupuncture. This course presented by SIM Medical Acupuncture in conjunction with Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine is the gold standard for veterinary acupuncture in the U.S.

What type of ailments can benefit from Mission Equine’s new treatment therapies?
  • Any condition causing pain, swelling or dysfunction can be addressed by acupuncture, E-stim and/or laser therapy. Systemic problems such as gastrointestinal (including chronic colic), respiratory, urogenital and neurologic issues are good candidates for these modalities.
  • Anxiety and its concurrent behavioral manifestations such as cribbing, teeth grinding, sour attitude and stomach ulcers is very well suited to these treatments.
  • Acupuncture, E-stim and laser therapy
are also used widely as a maintenance or
preventative procedure to ensure that your
horse is maintained in peak health and
    performance.

52How do these treatment alternatives work to help your horse?

  • Acupuncture – in its simplest form involves placing needles through the skin at specific sites or “points” along body “channels”. Stimulation of these points then causes microtrauma and inflammation in the immediate area leading to increased blood flow, muscle and myofascial relaxation, and increased local tissue immune response. Release of natural endorphins and serotonin decrease pain and increase well being. Neuromodulation, described as the normalization of nerve function and promotion of homeostasis (balance) and analgesia (pain relief) is one of the key goals of acupuncture.
  • Electrostimulation (E-stim) – An alternate method of stimulation in acupuncture therapy achieved by running an electric current between needles.
  • Laser Therapy – A laser is used to alter cellular metabolism by exposing cells to invisible, very powerful light “packets” of energy (photons) for extremely short periods of time (billionths of a second). The power and wavelengths produced by our equipment provides pain relief, reduces inflammation, decreases swelling or edema, improves blood flow, increases oxygen absorption by the tissues, enhances cell waste removal and accelerates regenerative processes.
